A lot of my conversations are with people who’ve built their business, reached the top echelons of their career or reached high levels of personal success then ask questions like:
- Why don’t I feel content?
- Where has the joy gone,
- I set big goals, they filled me with adrenaline as I worked hard to make them happen. So why does it feel empty when I get there?
- Why is the itch not being scratched?
If you recognise any of these questions, then I have another very simple question for you. It may be simple, but for a lot of people it can be one of the most difficult to answer.
What do you want? What do you really, really want? What would make your heart sing?
One of the reasons that this can be such a hard question to answer it that you’re probably not used to being listened to. Not in this way. People listen when you talk about your business, people listen when you talk in meetings, but how often do people ask you about you, and then really listen to what you have to say. And when we stop being asked, we forget how to answer.
One of my favourite quotes is by Dr Howard Thurman who was a mentor to Martin Luther King Junior who said:
“Don’t ask what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive and go do it. What the world needs is people who’ve come alive.”
If you have lost touch with what it is that really makes you feel alive or If you want to find the question to the question “what you want?” give me a call, I’ll listen to what you have to say.Return
